Athina Onassis, the shipping heiress, desires nothing more than to “build a family and lead a quiet life” with her new Brazilian husband, according to Valentino Garavani, who designed this ivory gown for her wedding yesterday.
The 20-year-old grand-daughter of Aristotle Onassis, the shipping magnate, was to marry the polo star, Alvaro Alfonso de Miranda, 32, in Sao Paulo last night.
She planned to wear a strapless, full-length hand-stitched Valentino dress, made of glossy and matt silk, embroidered with flowers and a 15ft veil trimmed with ivory Chantilly lace.
Valentino, a veteran designer and family friend, created the white lace dress that Jacqueline Kennedy wore in 1968 when she married Athina’s grandfather.

As the only child of Christina Onassis and her fourth husband, Thierry Roussel, Athina is the sole heir to her grandfather’s £1.6billion fortune. ”I’ve known Athina since she was a child,” said Valentino. “Her greatest wish is to create a happy family with Alvaro, away from intrusive eyes.”
